Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
