Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
