RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
